Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of one's Qi (pronounced chee) or natural healing energy.

Acupuncture is an ancient way of treating the disharmonies in the body. This knowledge and manner of treatment, goes back to 3000 years before the Common Era and was originally applied with the raw material available at the time. The use of crude objects such as animal bones, bamboo sticks and sharpened stones has been documented in Chinese history. Later, as the use of metal became available, metallic needles were introduced as a tool for acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture was transmitted from generation to generation in an oral form. The first known book on acupuncture is dated to 300 BC. It is written in a metaphorical way and describes a series of conversations between the Emperor and Court Physician. It is after the advent of that book that acupuncture was taught in a more "academic" fashion.

Acupuncture has been refined and developed over the centuries to become what we have today. It is still, in our day and age, subject to continued research and development.

Making use of the ancient Chinese system of energy paths, called meridians or channels, acupuncture treats disharmonies in the human body as affluence or lack of energy in the meridians. The Chinese way of healing is based on the philosophical concept that any disharmony in the human body is due a combination of disharmonies in the sociological, physical and mental environment of the person. Acupuncture is usually applied in conjunction with other therapies such as meditation, massage and movements.

In essence, Acupuncture is a way of assisting the body to fight the invasions or the disharmonies, rather than taking over the body's natural defense mechanism. A clear understanding of concepts such as Harmony, Yin Yang, the Five Elements, Path of meridians, amongst others, are essential in the study of the art of Acupuncture. It is a study that opens horizons foreign to most of us in the Western World, and forces us to abandon some of our most common views based on Modern Medicine.

A product of a long lasting tradition, Acupuncture is not only still relevant today, but offers us a healthy and educated alternative to contemporary ways of healing. The Pakua Course in Acupuncture is an extensive study in Chinese healing and in some countries will resume in an official licensing of the student. It is available to both Pakua students and non-students and is of immense benefit to laymen as well as health care professionals.
